Microsoft’s Plan to Outrun Google in the Quantum Race, One Qubit at a Time

Microsoft has unveiled the Majorana 1, a quantum chip utilizing topological qubits that could significantly reduce errors and scale up to a million qubits. Unlike traditional quantum approaches, Microsoft relies on exotic Majorana particles, which were only recently proven to exist, to create more stable and efficient qubits.

Microsoft’s new state of matter promises true quantum computing with a million qubits — maybe by 2033. The company is also announcing its own quantum chip, the Majorana 1, in a form factor that can scale up to a 1 million qubit Quantum Processing Unit, ready to attach to a dilution refrigerator and slot into an Azure data center.

This breakthrough positions Microsoft as a key player in the race toward practical quantum computing, with potential advancements in materials science, medicine, and AI.
